An air ambulance carrying a sick professor along with seven others crashed in a mountainous region in Chile.

The Piper Cheyenne II departed from Santiago with teacher and former government official Jose Luis Torres when they went off the radar near Tiltil on May 7.

CCTV footage shows a sudden bright flash of light during the night, believed to be from the moment of the impact.

Officials said the light aircraft, registered CC-CCC, was flying 10,000ft near Andes' El Roble Hill when it went missing.

Two pilots were transporting the professor along with his son-in-law and medics for treatment when they disappeared from tracking.

Curacavi Mayor Christian Hernandez said: ' Given the state of the terrain and rainy weather, the best way to access the area is being evaluated.'

Locals joined rescue teams in the operation to provide geographical knowledge of the area.

Search and rescue efforts are ongoing.
