American tourist arrested over spate of thefts at hotels in Bali
An American tourist was arrested over a spate of thefts at hotels in Bali.
Shane Lonnie Speirs, 50, allegedly targeted tourists checking in at resorts on the popular holiday island.
He was arrested after Bulgarian woman Desislava Dimitrova Harseva, 51, reported that her luggage with 76 million IDR (3,500 GBP) of items went missing from the lobby of the AMNAYA Resort Kuta.
The distraught holidaymaker said she was checking in at reception on March 26 and failed to notice the theft. She alerted the staff and police, who reviewed the security footage and identified Shane as the alleged thief.
Shane was tracked down and detained at a hotel in Badung on March 28.
He was frogmarched on a perp walk alongside other suspects in front of reporters during a press conference on Monday, May 5.
AKP Agus, Kuta Police Chief, said: 'The American targeted foreign nationals staying at several hotels in the tourist area. He lives nomadically and uses the stolen items such as clothes for daily use.'
The American, during his arrest, had earlier allegedly admitted he resorted to robbery to fund his stay on the tropical island.
Authorities found he had committed similar thefts before, by posing as a hotel guest before making off with unsuspecting tourists' belongings.
