Church bells rang throughout the Vatican in Rome as a new Pope was appointed to lead the Catholic Church.

Video shows bells tolling in the city after American Cardinal Robert Prevost, 69, was elected as the successor to Pope Francis on Thursday, May 8.

He will take the papal name Leo XIV and is the first American to become Pope.

Prevost, who also holds Peruvian citizenship, has been described as a 'moderate' on social issues and church doctrine.

In a statement, US President Donald Trump said: 'Congratulations to Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost, who was just named Pope. It is such an honor to realize that he is the first American Pope. What excitement, and what a Great Honor for our Country. I look forward to meeting Pope Leo XIV. It will be a very meaningful moment!'

However, Trump's supporters slammed the new Pope for previously posting on his social media anti-Trump rants and articles against the President's policies.
