In Xuhui District most of the shops along an 11-kilometer strip of riverside property cater to pets and their owners. (Sound_bite) Li Shao'en, Consumer: "I'm here to have coffee and eat some food. I can do this together with my dog. I think the service here is very good. Dogs are welcome in the stores. So, I feel free to bring it here." (Voice_over) In Hongkou District meanwhile, a pet-friendly bloc of nearly 40 businesses in the restaurant, entertainment, and retail sectors offer all sorts of pet friendly activities including pet art exhibitions and pet sporting events. Shanghai has also opened it's first pet-specific fresh food supermarket -- PetFresh. (Sound_bite) Hou, Consumer: "I'm here to buy pet buns for my dog. They are made and sold on the spot, which is very distinctive. I've never known pet food could be so cute." (Voice_over) Statistics show that there were about 52 million pet dogs across China last year, with spending on pets and pet related products exceeding 41 billion U.S. dollars.
