India: Trapped for hours in 10-foot well, tigress rescued following marathon operation
India - May 07, 2025 While visiting his farm, a farmer heard noises from a well. On peering in, he discovered a tigress struggling inside. He alerted the farm owner, who informed the forest department. Officials, along with block administration, promptly arrived to assess and handle the situation. The incident occurred in Pench National Park, in Chhindwara district, in central India’s Madhya Pradesh, on May 7. Visuals show a tigress is seen lying inside a deep well. Forest department officials first lift the tigress onto a cot using ropes, then skillfully transfer her from the cot into a cage. Ropes tie the cage containing the tigress and pull it out of the well. Nearby villagers rush to witness the rescue operation. Speaking to Newslions, Rajnish Singh, Deputy Conservator of Forests, Wildlife, Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh, stated that on the evening of May 7, around 5:30 pm, forest officials were alerted about a tiger trapped in an open well. By 7:00 pm, a rescue team arrived and confirmed the animal was a tigress. Upon receiving the alert, the forest department immediately began organizing the rescue operation. Within an hour, the team arrived at the location equipped with a cage, a hydraulic system, and skilled personnel. They first lowered a bamboo cot into the well and placed the cage on top. The exhausted tiger gradually entered the cage on its own. After several hours of persistent effort, the team successfully lifted the cage using the hydraulic machine and brought the tigress out safely. The 10-foot-deep well, surrounded by unstable black cotton soil, presented serious access difficulties. Despite the terrain, a joint operation involving forest officials, the assistant director, local police, and rescue workers led to the successful extraction of the exhausted tigress by 9:30 pm. After being pulled from the well, the tigress showed signs of extreme fatigue. Her claws were visibly worn, likely from repeated efforts to climb out. Due to her fragile state, the team chose not to reintroduce her to the wild but instead transported her to a veterinary facility for urgent medical attention. Sadly, despite all attempts to save her, the tigress passed away at 10:45 pm from injuries and severe exhaustion. We have secured the footages from Rajnish Singh, Deputy Conservator of Forests, Wildlife, Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh, it's an Exclusive story.
