Dozens of passengers injured as bus veers off road in northeast Thailand
Dozens of passengers were injured when their bus veered off the road in Thailand.
The vehicle reportedly swerved onto the median strip while coasting along a highway in Khon Kaen, early morning on May 9.
Terrified passengers screamed as the bus flipped over and landed on its side.
Police said they were notified at 3 am local time. They arrived with medics at the scene, where they found the coach overturned on the central divider.
Rescue teams shattered the windscreen and extracted some 36 injured passengers from the wreckage.
The wounded were to the Ban Phai Hospital for treatment. Two of them suffered serious injuries - a commuter with a broken arm, and another who complained of severe chest pain and breathing difficulties.
A Ban Phai Police Station spokesman said the bus from Rayong was bound for Nakhon Pathom in northeast Thailand.
He said: 'According to the passengers, the bus was driving along the correct lane before the crash. Then, it slowly switched lanes without braking before flipping over.
'We are gathering CCTV footage from the area and will question the driver to determine the cause of the accident. We are also calling the bus company to provide compensation.'
Police believe the driver had dozed off at the wheel.
Thailand has one of the world's worst road safety records. Ministers have set the goal of reducing fatalities from 32.7 deaths per 100,000 people to 12 per 100,000 people by the year 2027.
However, a lack of road safety education in schools along with notoriously easy driving tests, police failures to enforce road laws, and chronic under-investment in infrastructure, all appear to hamper the efforts.
