A Polish tourist reportedly plunged to his death from a fifth-floor balcony while drinking beer with his wife.

Slawomir Mizera, 34, was relaxing with his partner at the Phuket Villa Patong Beach Condominium on the popular holiday island in southern Thailand on May 2.

However, when Slawomir stood up to return to their room, he allegedly lost his balance and tumbled over the balcony rails. He smashed his head on the pavement as his shocked wife screamed for help.

Police said they received a report at 12:13 am local time on May 3. They found Slawomir lying face-down on the street with blood pooling around his head.

Police Major Channarong Prakhongkuea of the Patong Police Station said: 'His wife told us they were staying in room 5503. They had been drinking together on the balcony, but when he stood up, he lost his balance and fell to his death.

'Forensics officers have performed an initial inspection of the body. He was taken to the Vachira Phuket Hospital for a post-mortem exam.'

Authorities said they will contact the Polish embassy to inform Slawomir's family and to arrange for his repatriation.
