Newborn girl rescued from toilet after mother gives birth
A newborn girl was rescued after her mother gave birth to her in the toilet.
The infant was pulled from the water by emergency responders after her Burmese mother, Hnin Ei Phyo, 36, gave birth in Chonburi, southern Thailand, on May 8.
Rescuers were called to the modest one-storey home and found the woman leaning against the bathroom wall with her shorts pulled down.
Her blood-covered baby girl lay in the toilet with her umbilical cord still attached. Medics cut the umbilical cord and rushed both mother and child to the hospital in an ambulance, accompanied by Hnin's husband Thein Than Oo.
Footage shows staff inside the vehicle cradling the girl swaddled in blankets to keep her warm. Hnin was later wheeled inside on a stretcher.
Rescue volunteer Kittisak Phuengpa said: 'When we arrived, we found the woman in labour, and the baby's head was partially submerged in the toilet bowl. We quickly lifted the baby out and began stimulating her. We were relieved she still had a pulse. The baby was a girl, and she is now safe.'
Hnin claimed she was unaware she was pregnant, despite her belly expanding over the last few months. She and her daughter were recovering at the Chonburi Hospital.
