A demonstration and commemoration in Rotterdam's Schouwburg Square was organized by various groups and was attended by a crowd that included both Muslims and Dutch citizens. Participants carried Palestinian flags, while banners listing the names of those killed in Gaza and posters explaining the Nakba were displayed to attract the attention of passers-by. Every year on May 15, Palestinians observe the anniversary of the Nakba, or Catastrophe in Arabic, when hundreds of thousands were uprooted from their homes and lands by armed Zionists in 1948. More than 52,800 Palestinians have been killed in Gaza in a brutal Israeli onslaught since October 2023, most of them women and children. The International Criminal Court issued arrest warrants last November for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant for war crimes and crimes against humanity in Gaza. Israel also faces a genocide case at the International Court of Justice for its war on the enclave.
