Germany: Smarter E Europe 2025 explores solutions following Spain's major blackout
Exhibitors at Smarter E Europe 2025 are actively seeking innovative solutions to address the recent blackout in Spain, which saw a dramatic 60 percent loss in power generation. With grid stability and renewable energy integration at the forefront, the event, held in Munich, Germany, highlights urgent infrastructure needs for a more resilient energy future. On April 28th, Spain suddenly lost 60 percent of its power generation, triggering a nationwide blackout that also affected Portugal. In just five seconds, Spain lost approximately 15 gigawatts of capacity, equivalent to 60 percent of its national electricity demand. Preliminary findings cite grid imbalances, frequency issues, and renewable energy fluctuations as the likely causes. At Smarter E Europe, the continent's largest exhibitions for the energy industry, participants are presenting solutions. Germany's Phoenix Connect focuses on power reliability and grid stability. Too much or too little power destabilizes the grid. Real-time control over individual energy producers helps balance supply and demand, which becomes all the more crucial with the introduction of renewable resources. Austrian green tech company M-TEC Energy says large scale battery storage is the solution. Spain's Basque Energy Cluster, an association of more than 200 energy companies, all affected by the blackout, stresses the need to reinforce national infrastructure. Better interconnection with Europe could also help. Spain currently links only five percent of its capacity to neighbors - far below the EU's 15 percent target for all member states by 2030. The blackout in Spain serves as a critical reminder that transitioning to a smarter, more decentralized energy system is not only good for the environment, but also a matter of national security and public safety, making events like Smarter E Europe pivotal forums for discussions about the infrastructure for the energy landscapes of tomorrow. It needs solutions like this so that the grid operator can influence the system. If he doesn't need the energy or there is not enough capacity in the grid, it can lower the power production, and the grid operator has access to these decentral plants."; [SHOT OVERLAYING SOUNDBITE] 4. The energy suppliers have to do something and it's these large battery storage facilities. In China, large battery parks are becoming more and more common, and with the switch to renewable energy, we cannot avoid investing in this technology."; [SHOT OVERLAYING SOUNDBITE] 9. And then power electronics devices that manage the conversion of electricity for the integration especially of renewables in the grid."; [SHOT OVERLAYING SOUNDBITE] 12.
