One person was injured when gunshots were fired during voting in the Philippines.

Footage shows terrified locals fleeing as a barrage of gunfire rang out at the Sagap Village voting centre in Abra on Monday morning May 12.

Officials said at least one person was struck.

The Bangued municipal police said the attack was a 'possible act of intimidation' to cause a failure of the election in the area.

A police spokesman said: 'The Abra Police Provincial Office has sent a quick response team to investigate the incident. The voting will continue as normal.'

The attack came after local officials urged the Commission on Elections to place Abra under its control over a spate of killings in recent weeks.

Abra Vice Governor Joy Bernos said numerous candidates have been killed shortly after declaring their bid for office since 2024.

The province, nestled in the mountainous Cordillera region, has 188,957 registered voters, with a long history of bloodshed and political violence as local warlords hire private armies to eliminate their rivals.

The Philippines is holding its midterm elections today, May 12.
