The Coast Guard rescued a sick captain from a fishing vessel off the coast of Hawaii.

The 68-year-old skipper of the commercial vessel Sea Angel had reportedly been suffering from severe abdominal pain and fever for over 10 days, prompting a dramatic rescue operation.

An HC-130 Hercules aircraft crew from Coast Guard Air Station Barbers Point responded and carried an urgent airdrop of antibiotics to the vessel on Wednesday, May 7, to stabilise the patient's condition.

On Friday, an MH-65 Dolphin helicopter crew from the same air station arrived, hoisted the captain, and transported him to Hilo Medical Center. He was said to be in stable condition.

Commander Andrew Williams, search and rescue mission coordinator of the Joint Rescue Coordination Center Honolulu, said: 'Communication and coordination are essential when it comes to search and rescue, especially complex, offshore cases.

'It was through the training and readiness of each crew, the ability of our personnel to translate Vietnamese, and the long-range capabilities of our aircraft that we were able to successfully deliver the patient to the care he needed.'
