Girl with horror burns across her body finds confidence with makeup tutorials
A Filipina girl who endured horrific burns across her body has found confidence through makeup tutorials.
Larra Francesca Lasam, 24, said that she was a shy and insecure child before, and her confidence took an even harder hit after a tragic accident when she was 11 years old.
The incident occurred during a fiesta celebration in her hometown of Lapu-Lapu City, Cebu, the Philippines.
Larra needed to use the toilet back then, but since there was a power outage, she grabbed a candle and was accompanied by her cousin, Jam.
She said: 'The fire from the candle got caught with the leak from the LPG. The entire comfort room blew up and we got trapped inside the burning comfort room.
'I remember seeing flames everywhere, and screaming and banging the door. I remember dipping my head in the bucket of water to alleviate the pain.'
Both Larra and her cousin were hospitalised for two months, undergoing at least nine operations under general anesthesia. She suffered second and third-degree burns on 46 per cent of her body.
Looking back, she said the emotional pain of the experience was often harder to cope with than the physical pain.
She would usually hide and cover herself with cardigans and masks to avoid seeing her scars.
Eventually, Larra learned to accept 'herself' for who she truly is. She said she needed to do it for herself and her parents.
Today, Larra, just like many other women her age, dresses more confidently, expresses herself, and can be seen enjoying doing makeup tutorials on her social media.
'I've become the Phoenix, who rose from the ashes of life's fires. I now know that whatever comes my way, I can battle it, I can handle it, and I can come out of it brighter than before. And the light that I have come to have, I will share to other people.'
