Slovakia: Hungarian-Slovak border closure extended due to mouth and foot disease

An emergency was declared in early April after the disease was detected on several farms — the country's first recorded outbreak in 50 years. Although foot-and-mouth disease is not transmissible to humans, it is highly contagious among cloven-hoofed animals, including cattle, pigs, sheep and goats. In response, Slovakian authorities have deployed soldiers and implemented disinfection measures in border regions shared with Hungary and Austria. Despite these efforts, the extended closure has significantly disrupted life in border communities. Locals on both sides of the border report having to walk across closed checkpoints, take lengthy detours or use two vehicles — one on each side of the border — to maintain their routines. The authorities say that these restrictions are necessary in order to protect livestock and prevent the disease from spreading further.
