DEMONSTRATORS MARCHING TEL AVIV, ISRAEL - MAY 12: Thousands of Israelis gathered at the "Hostages Square" in Tel Aviv on Monday, May 12, ahead of the expected release of Israeli-American captive Edan Alexander from Gaza. While the demonstrators waited near the Ministry of Defense building for the hostage swap to take place, they also continued to press Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's government to release the other hostages in Gaza as soon as possible. Alexander, the last known living US hostage held in Gaza, is scheduled to be released by the Palestinian resistance group Hamas today. The Qassam Brigades, the armed wing of the Palestinian resistance group Hamas, confirmed that it will release Alexander. According to the Israeli public broadcaster KAN, Alexander will be released in Khan Younis in the southern Gaza Strip. According to Hamas, the release would be among several steps aimed at facilitating a ceasefire, reopening border crossings, and allowing humanitarian aid and relief supplies into the Gaza Strip. Since October 2023 the Israeli army has pursued a brutal offensive on the Gaza Strip, to date killing nearly 53,000 Palestinians, most of them women and children. The International Criminal Court issued arrest warrants last November for Netanyahu and his former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant for war crimes and crimes against humanity in Gaza. Israel also faces a genocide case at the International Court of Justice for its war on the enclave.
