VARIOUS OF PEOPLE GATHERED AT PRISONERS’ SQUARE CHANTING WHILE SOME HOLDING BANNERS, SOME HOLDING FLAGSTEL AVIV, ISRAEL - MAY 12, 2025: Israelis gathered in “Prisoners’ Square” in Tel Aviv on Monday, May 12, following Hamas’s announcement that it would hand over captured soldier Idan Alexander, a dual US-Israeli citizen, to a Red Cross delegation. Demonstrators assembled near the Ministry of Defense, awaiting the prisoner swap while pressing the Netanyahu government to secure the release of other captives held by Hamas in Gaza. The news of Alexander’s impending release sparked widespread joy among Israelis. Hamas stated that the release of Alexander, the first male captive soldier to be freed, was a step toward establishing a ceasefire, opening Gaza’s entry points, and facilitating humanitarian aid, following negotiations with the US administration. According to the Israeli public broadcaster KAN, Alexander will be released in Khan Younis in the southern Gaza Strip. According to Hamas, the release would be among several steps aimed at facilitating a ceasefire, reopening border crossings, and allowing humanitarian aid and relief supplies into the Gaza Strip. Since October 2023 the Israeli army has pursued a brutal offensive on the Gaza Strip, to date killing nearly 53,000 Palestinians, most of them women and children. The International Criminal Court issued arrest warrants last November for Netanyahu and his former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant for war crimes and crimes against humanity in Gaza. Israel also faces a genocide case at the International Court of Justice for its war on the enclave.
