DAMAGED TENTS AND SCHOOL BUILDING (TWO SHOTS)GAZA, PALESTINE - MAY 12, 2025: Following the release of Edan Alexander, a US-Israeli dual citizen soldier, by Hamas, the Israeli army resumed attacks on the Gaza Strip, resulting in the death of a Palestinian woman and serious injuries to a young girl on Monday, May 12. Hamas’s armed wing, the al-Qassam Brigades, had freed Alexander in the evening, handing him over to the Red Cross. Hamas stated that the release was a step toward achieving a full ceasefire and a broader agreement to secure the return of all captives. Health sources reported that Israeli artillery targeted the area near Al-Ramlah School, a shelter for displaced people in Gaza City’s Al-Daraj neighborhood, causing the casualties. The assault came after the Israeli military confirmed receiving Alexander from the International Committee of the Red Cross in Gaza. Israeli forces also shelled areas in eastern and northern Gaza, south of Rafah, and east of Khan Younis. Since October 2023 the Israeli army has pursued a brutal offensive on the Gaza Strip, to date killing nearly 53,000 Palestinians, most of them women and children. The International Criminal Court issued arrest warrants last November for Netanyahu and his former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant for war crimes and crimes against humanity in Gaza. Israel also faces a genocide case at the International Court of Justice for its war on the enclave.
