United States - February 16, 2025 Chilling video shows the dramatic moments deputies faced confronting two kids under ten with a loaded gun. The two boys in the video are seven and nine years old. Bernalillo County Sheriff John Allen credited their drone program for helping stop what could have been a deadly shooting. Instead of being charged with a crime, deputies said they’re working to link the family with behavioral health services. It was a high-intensity moment for deputies, urging two kids to put down a gun. It happened in February after Bernalillo County Sheriff’s deputies were called to a home they’ve been to before. This time it was for a nine- and seven-year-old playing with a handgun. After five minutes of talking, deputies fired a non-lethal projectile at the wall and moved in to stop the kids and grab the gun. Deputies captured it all from a drone. "I will tell, if it was not for our drone program. We would have probably went in there a little bit more blind and been into a deadly force confrontation pretty quick, and as you can imagine, it would have not gone well with us killing and shooting a 7- and 9-year-old," said Sheriff John Allen, Bernalillo County. After securing the gun, BCSO said its behavioral health unit took over the case. So far, they haven’t filed charges. "We’re dealing with a seven- and nine-year-old, so now we’re looking at the adult side, how they had the firearm, are they gonna be charged with the Bennie Hargrove law we’re looking into all of that," said Sheriff Allen. In the three months since the case unfolded, BCSO said they’ve linked the family with case management, trauma therapy, medical services, and behavioral support. "I don’t know how much I’m able to say, so I’m just gonna leave it very vague, but we know where the children learned the behavior from and that is being addressed as well," said Danielle Smith, the case agent with the family. BCSO said the case remains under investigation, and they are still trying to figure out exactly how the two kids got the gun.
