At least 21 people, mostly daily wagers, died and 10 others were hospitalised after allegedly consuming spurious liquor in Punjab’s Amritsar district, police Tuesday said, adding a 10 people, including the alleged kingpin, have been arrested.

Deputy Superintendent of Police (Majitha) Amolak Singh and Station House Officer, Majitha Avtar Singh have been suspended for ‟negligence resulted in the fatal incident” and departmental inquiries initiated against them, state police chief Gaurav Yadav said.

Confirming the deaths, Maninder Singh, Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP), Amritsar Rural, said, the victims are from seven villages — Bhangali, Patalpuri, Marari Kalan, Talwandi Khumman, Karnala, Bhangwan and Therewal villages — all under Majitha Assembly constituency.

As the toll climbed, Opposition parties attacked the Aam Aadmi Party government and demanded the resignation of Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann. The CM, meanwhile, visited the affected villages, met the families of the victims and vowed to ensure the strictest punishment for the culprits. “These are not deaths, these are murders. Such a tragedy could not have occurred without political, bureaucratic, or police support,” said Mann.
