A wild monitor lizard tried to break into a house before a rescuer chased it away with a pole.

Footage shows the reptile looking for an opening to slip through on the glass walls of a home in Nonthaburi, Thailand.

However, the sliding entrance was shut tight, and a volunteer tried to drive it away.

The 4ft (1m) animal resisted the team member but was eventually pinned down and returned to its habitat.

The shaken resident said: 'The lizard really wanted to enter my house. I was scared because it was very big.'

Asian water monitor lizards normally live in canals, swamps, sewers and ponds in cities in Thailand. They feed on fish, snakes, frogs and scraps of food left by humans.

The reptiles are aggressive when threatened and have a mildly venomous bite which sometimes carries harmful bacteria. The Godzilla-like reptiles are also a protected species in the country so their population thrives.
