Eight passengers were reportedly killed when a tourist boat capsized in Indonesia.

The vessel, named Tiga Putra, experienced repeated motor failure and eventually overturned after becoming unstable and being struck by waves off Malabero Beach in Bengkulu on May 11.

Authorities reported that the vessel, captained by Edi Susanto, departed from Malabero Beach and was headed towards Tikus Island on Sunday afternoon.

The journey began smoothly but deteriorated midway through the trip.

Acting Regional Secretary of Bengkulu Province, Herwan Antoni, said: 'During the trip, the situation was conducive, but in the middle of the journey, the ship suddenly stalled—the engine died—so Edi asked the crew to refuel the engine.

'It stalled three times. When the engine failed a third time, the ship was already tilted and then capsized.'

Dramatic footage shows the harrowing moment the watercraft began sinking, with panicked passengers still on board reacting in fear and confusion.

Local media reported that the boat was carrying 107 people at the time of the incident, including one captain, five crew members, and 98 tourists.

Tourism Minister Widiyanti Putri Wardhana expressed sorrow over the tragedy.

She said: 'We are deeply concerned about this incident, and on behalf of the Ministry of Tourism, we extend our deepest condolences to the families of the victims. May they be given fortitude and strength amidst this tragedy.'

Authorities continue to investigate the cause of the incident.
