This is the dramatic moment three students were rescued from raging floods in the Philippines.

The trio were returning home after voting at their poll centres when they were stranded in the swollen Pangi River in Sarangani, on May 12.

Onlookers passing from a nearby bridge called the police when they saw the youngsters stuck in the surging waters.

Footage shows responders battling against the strong current to reach the students. They tied a rope to a nearby coconut tree and held it as they made their way across the flood.

Colonel Deanry Francisco, Sarangani Provincial Police director, said: 'That time, there was heavy rain in the mountains which caused the river to rise as the students were crossing. They were almost swept away by the flash flood.'

The maritime police said one officer was slightly injured during the rescue. They said in a statement: 'Everyone involved is safe after the incident. The three rescued students underwent debriefing and physical examination, after which they were advised to return home.

'Authorities continue to remind the public to be cautious when travelling, especially in areas near bodies of water, to avoid this kind of incident.'

State weather agency PAGASA said the rain was caused by the easterlies.

The Philippines and neighbouring countries in Southeast Asia are in their annual monsoon rainy season which sees soaring temperatures followed by powerful rain storms in the afternoon leading to widespread flash floods.
