Nine police officers were killed when a lorry collided with a truck in Malaysia.

The fatal crash occurred at Km 15 of Jalan Sungai Manik–Sungai Lampam in Perak on early Tuesday morning, May 13.

Authorities said the victims were part of a Federal Reserve Unit (FRU) convoy returning from a security assignment when a lorry carrying sand crashed head-on into their truck.

Footage from the scene shows the overturned vehicle and victims lying on the ground as emergency personnel respond.

Hilir Perak police chief Assistant Commissioner Dr Bakri Zainal Abidin said that the lorry driver had been arrested.

He added: 'We can confirm that eight FRU personnel died at the scene, while a ninth officer succumbed to injuries while receiving treatment in the hospital's red zone. Two others are in critical condition, and seven more are being treated for moderate injuries.'

An investigation into the cause of the crash is underway.

Malaysia records one of the highest road fatality rates in Southeast Asia. In 2021, the country had the second-highest death rate among ASEAN nations, with 23.7 road deaths per 100,000 people - just behind Thailand, which led the region with 29.7, based on data from the Global Burden of Disease 2024 report.
