A Chinese passenger sparked panic when he opened a plane's emergency door without permission.

The male traveller reportedly activated the emergency exit while the plane was taxiing on the Kunming Changshui International Airport runway in Kunming, China, on May 11.

Footage shows passengers walking along the cabin aisle after the passenger had yanked open the door and reportedly deployed the evacuation slide on China Eastern Airlines flight MU5828.

The young man was said to have been calm and told them he 'wanted to get some fresh air' after the aircraft landed.

Though no injuries were reported, his bizarre act kept passengers from deboarding for 20 minutes. Police later arrived and escorted him off the plane for interrogation.

The flight took off from Changsha and arrived in Kunming at 8:42 am local time on May 11.

Opening the emergency exit of a plane is illegal in China. Offenders may face between 100,000 and 200,000 yuan (10,400 to 20,800 GBP) depending on the plane model.
