Los Angeles, United States - May 14, 2025 05/13/2025 10:45 pm GMT-0700 VENTURA, Calif. – A grunion run occurred at Ventura Beach near the pier late Tuesday night, beginning around 10:45 p.m. The natural event saw the small, silvery fish moving ashore to spawn in the sand under the moonlit sky. Grunion runs are a seasonal occurrence along southern California beaches, typically taking place between March and August. The timing of these runs is influenced by the phase of the moon and the high tides, which create ideal conditions for the grunion to come ashore and lay their eggs. While grunion runs are a common event along the California coast, they remain a popular spectacle for those lucky enough to witness them. Marine experts advise that the fish should not be disturbed during the spawning process to help protect their population. By midnight, the fish had returned to the ocean, completing their spawning activity.
