A flash flood surged through a campsite in southern Thailand.

Tourists visiting the Wang Kiang Khu rafting area in Phang Nga Province were urged to step out of their tents as floodwaters reached the front of their temporary shelters.

Local media reported that the holidaymakers were asleep when the sudden rush of water swept through the area.

The accommodation owner helped them pack up their belongings and move to a nearby elevated house. However, the water rose rapidly within minutes, making it impossible to move their parked cars in time.

Footage shows partially submerged tents and vehicles in Phang Nga on Monday, May 12.

The accommodation fully refunded the tourists for their stay, with the owner suggesting they use the money for car repairs instead.

The vehicles were reportedly not seriously damaged, as only a small amount of water had entered the footwell area.

The Thai Meteorological Department said a moderate high-pressure system from China was extending towards Vietnam and the South China Sea, bringing moisture to northern Thailand.

Thailand and neighbouring countries in Southeast Asia are in their annual monsoon rainy season, which sees soaring temperatures followed by powerful rain storms in the afternoon, leading to widespread flash floods.
