Thousands of members of the National Coordination of Education Workers (CNTE) took part in a mass rally as they called for an indefinite national strike. The CNTE set up a camp at the Zocalo main square while demanding a 100% salary increase and a better retirement system for their members. In Mexico City and other cities nationwide, teachers took to the streets calling on the government to address their concerns. “A fundamental part of this day is that by fighting we will also teach,” said Sheila Lidero Franco, a teacher participating in the protest. “We will be fighting for our rights, for a freedom of expression that is also being curtailed from us. On May 15th, we fight for everyone.” Another teacher, Dagoberto Cabrera, urged the government to respond to their demands. “Let the government look at us again and provide solutions to our demands, because they are all rights that have been taken away from us,” he said. “Today, the class is in the street and it is called dignity,” said teacher Pedro Hernandez Morales. “The class is in the cities of the entire country, in every corner where there is a teacher, a professor, a dignified education worker.
