A fire at a chemical warehouse triggered a lockdown in Spain.

More than 80,000 locals were forced to stay indoors following the blaze at the chemical storage facility in the La Red industrial park in Alcala de Guadaira, some 16 kilometres southeast of Seville.

Emergency services reportedly received hundreds of calls starting at 1:20 pm on Wednesday, May 14, regarding the fire at the site, which local chemical distributor Plainsur operates.

Dramatic footage shows a massive plume of dark smoke billowing into the sky. Firefighters from seven nearby towns were deployed to contain the blaze.

Residents were urged to remain inside and keep windows and doors closed due to uncertainty about the smoke's toxicity.

Local media reported that at least one person was injured and hospitalised with burns.

The warehouse has been in operation since 1985, covering 11,000 square metres and storing thousands of chemical containers.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
