(SOUNDBITE) (Turkish) ANADOLU PHOTOJOURNALIST MURAT SENGUL SAYING: "In this photo, we see fear on people's faces because they are looking up at a drone. Above them, there is a drone and a fighter jet. When people in Beirut hear the sound of a drone, they get terrified because there is nothing they can do against it. People here (in the photo) fled from bombed sites, but there is no safe place for them to take shelter. In this photo, we can see that in modern warfare technology, there is no safe place." AMSTERDAM, THE NETHERLANDS - MAY 16: Two Anadolu (AA) photojournalists received awards at the prestigious World Press Photo (WPP) 2025 competition during a ceremony held at the historic De Nieuwe Kerk in Amsterdam, the Netherlands on Friday, May 16. Murat Sengul won first place in the West, Central, and South Asia – Singles category for his striking photograph, "Drone Attacks in Beirut," capturing the fear of civilians amid aerial strikes. Meanwhile, Ali Jadallah, AA’s photojournalist in Gaza, was honored in the Stories category for his powerful series, "Gaza Under Israeli Attack," documenting the devastation and resilience in the besieged enclave. Since Jadallah could not attend due to being in Gaza, Reuters photojournalist Mohammed Salem accepted the award on his behalf. Sengul’s winning image shows terrified civilians in Beirut’s Dahiyeh neighborhood tracking an overhead drone during Israeli attacks. " In this photo, we see fear on people's faces because they are looking up at a drone. Above them, there is a drone and a fighter jet," Sengül told AA. " When people in Beirut hear the sound of a drone, they get terrified because there is nothing they can do against it." He emphasized that modern warfare leaves no safe havens, as civilians find themselves defenseless against advanced military technology. Jadallah’s 10-photo series portrays the harrowing aftermath of Israel’s attacks on Gaza, including destruction, displacement, and the struggle for survival. The World Press Photo Contest, organized by the Dutch Foundation for Photojournalism with support from the Dutch royal family, received 59,000 submissions from 3,778 photographers across 141 countries. An independent jury selected 42 winners, highlighting critical global issues such as conflict, climate change, and human rights. Writing by Sibel Uygun
