This is the terrifying moment a plane flies above a homemade rocket launched during a traditional festival in Thailand.

Dramatic footage shows an aircraft close to the flying explosive in the village of Huai Kaew in Yasothon on Wednesday, May 7.

The DIY missile appeared to shoot upward in the direction of the plane, prompting audible concern from spectators. However, local authorities confirmed the two were at significantly different altitudes and that the rocket did not come close to the aircraft.

The incident occurred during the Bun Bang Fai Rocket Festival, an annual celebration held in northeastern Thailand to mark the beginning of the rainy season.

As part of the tradition, communities launch large homemade rockets - known as Bang Fai - into the sky as a symbolic plea for rainfall to support rice cultivation.

The festival also includes parades, cultural performances, and community gatherings.

While it is widely celebrated, the use of powerful homemade rockets has raised safety concerns in recent years due to occasional accidents and near-misses.

Last year, at least two people were killed, and dozens more were injured when a rocket misfired during the annual festival on June 16.

Some individuals reportedly suffered burns, head trauma, and broken limbs from the force of the blast.

Villagers believe the rocket may have contained an excessive amount of gunpowder and failed to comply with safety standards.

Festival organisers said the event was halted immediately, and police later visited the scene to collect evidence.
