British tourist, 19, survives horror car crash that killed child in Indonesia
British and Icelandic tourists survived a horror car crash that killed a child in Indonesia.
The holidaymakers were being chauffeured along a winding mountain road when their car crashed into an oncoming motorcycle in East Lombok, on May 13.
Police arrived at the scene after receiving a report from residents. They found debris scattered on the road, and two tourists who suffered minor injuries.
The pair were identified by officers as Scottish passenger Ben Alexander Grant, 19, and Icelandic holidaymaker Reynisdottir, 28, among the injured.
A child named Arkana, 5, was severely wounded after the crash flung him off the motorcycle. The youngster was rushed to the Sembalun Health Centre but was declared dead after a brief stay in the intensive care unit.
Harrowing footage show's Arkana's distraught mother, Walfatul Adawiah, 32, sobbing as her son was loaded onto a truck to be taken to the hospital.
A motorcycle was lying on its side on the road, which was strewn with debris and green fluid.
A hospital officer said: 'We are saddened by this event. The casualty was a small child. The other two injured victims are still being treated.'
Iptu Lalu Subardi, Sembalun police chief, said the case has been handed over to the East Lombok Police Traffic Accident Unit.
He added: 'We believe the cause of the accident was that the car driver was distracted while entering the bend. We would like to remind all road users in the Sembalun tourist area to reduce their speed on winding roads. Maintain a safe distance between vehicles and remain alert. Don't use gadgets while driving.'
The car driver, Topang Gunawan, 28, was detained pending legal action.
Road accidents are common in Indonesia due to substandard infrastructure, poor road safety education, and widespread traffic violations such as reckless driving and lack of helmet use among motorcyclists. High vehicle density and insufficient law enforcement also exacerbate the problem.
