Caribbean Netherlands: Tens of thousands march in The Hague against Dutch government’s Israel policy (2)
THE HAGUE, NETHERLANDS - MAY 18, 2025: Nearly 100,000 people gathered in The Hague, the Netherlands on Sunday (May 18), to protest the Dutch government’s support for Israel and call for tougher action against its offensive in Gaza. Held at Malieveld Square under the banner “Draw a Red Line for Gaza,” the protest was organized by a coalition of more than 80 local and international NGOs, including Amnesty International, Human Rights Watch, and Oxfam Novib. Wearing red to symbolize a "red line," protestors sent a powerful visual message demanding immediate action to halt as Israel’s ongoing violations of international humanitarian law. The massive turnout transformed the heart of The Hague into a powerful display of peaceful yet urgent resistance, underscoring a nationwide demand for accountability and urgent action on Gaza. Speakers accused the Dutch government of remaining silent in the face of ongoing atrocities in Gaza and criticized its continued military and political support for Israel. Protesters demanded sanctions, an end to arms exports, and a fundamental shift in foreign policy. Marchers passed the Peace Palace, home to the International Court of Justice, and the Dutch Parliament before returning to the square, chanting slogans such as “Stop the genocide,” “Free Palestine,” and “No justice, no peace.” The Israeli army intensified air assaults on Gaza in the last five days, coinciding with US President Donald Trump’s Gulf tour that included Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and the United Arab Emirates. At least 378 Palestinians were killed and scores injured in the onslaught, according to the Health Ministry. The Israeli army has pursued a genocidal war against Gaza since October 2023, killing more than 53,300 Palestinians, most of them women and children. The International Criminal Court issued arrest warrants last November for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant for war crimes and crimes against humanity in Gaza.
