PROSPECTIVE PILGRIMS WAITING AT THE CHECKPOINTDAMASCUS, SYRIA - MAY 18: Prospective pilgrims were bid farewell with prayers in the Syrian capital city of Damascus on Monday, May 18, before departing for Islam’s holy sites for the first time after the ousting of Bashar al-Assad's regime. Following the overthrow of the Baath regime on December 8, 2024, prospective pilgrims from all provinces of Syria experienced the joy of going to Islam’s holy sites via Damascus for the first time in 14 years. Due to the civil war caused by the Baath regime, Syrian Muslims were not able to go to the holy sites via Damascus in groups. It is expected that over 22,000 Syrian pilgrims will go to the holy sites from Damascus and abroad until June 2.
