Palestine supporter holds flag during Israel's Eurovision performance
A supporter of Palestine waved a flag during Israel's Eurovision performance.
Footage shows a demonstrator holding up a Palestinian flag in the audience while Israeli contestant Yuval Raphael performed on stage.
Raphael, a 24-year-old singer from Ra'anana, survived the Hamas massacre at the Nova music festival on October 7, 2023. She played dead and hid under a pile of bodies in a bomb shelter for hours, with shrapnel lodged in her leg until she was eventually rescued.
The protesters were voicing their opposition to Israel's participation in the contest amid the ongoing war in Gaza.
Reports indicated that the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) had recently updated its policy to allow Palestinian flags in the audience, lifting a previous ban. However, stricter guidelines remain for participating artists to ensure neutrality.
The event occurred in Basel, with the Swiss city hosting the contest on Saturday, May 17.
