A wild elephant stopped by a religious shrine to search and steal food intended for Buddhist gods.

The jumbo named Plai Nguang Thong emerged from the forest and found snacks on the spirit house in Nakhon Nayok Province, Thailand.

Footage shows Plai Nguang Thong reaching its trunk into the small wooden building that resembled a bird house on May 18.

The pachyderm took a banana, drank water, and tasted some of the incense sticks left by devotees who previously came to the site to pray.

Plai Nguang Thong later returned to its habitat after eating, although it did not damage the structure.

Thailand has up to 3,500 elephants in the wild. The population has been increasing in recent years, but it is still a fraction of the estimated 300,000 wild elephants that lived in the country at the beginning of the 20th century.

The main threats to wild elephants in Thailand are habitat loss and fragmentation, poaching, and conflict with humans.
