UK: Breathtaking Moment As Critically Endangered Bongo Calf Is Born At Woburn Safari Park
Woburn, United Kingdom - May 05, 2025 Keepers at Woburn Safari Park are celebrating a remarkable event with the birth of a critically endangered Eastern mountain bongo calf. Born on Monday, 5th May, the newborn is the first calf for Odongo the bongo and father Sonny. The calf’s early days were difficult due to his tiny frame, requiring physiotherapy to strengthen his hips and legs. Odongo, however, quickly showed her natural instincts. She became a devoted, protective mother, offering her calf every chance to thrive. This birth follows the arrival of another male calf, Djembe, born to Odongo’s twin sister Othaya in October 2024. Now, the cousins are already forming a close bond, sharing gentle greetings and staying side by side. Their interactions highlight the powerful social ties among bongos. Djembe, despite his young age, appears to comfort and guide the new calf. Othaya and Odongo are among the only two surviving sets of bongo twins ever recorded in captivity. Born in 2014, they grew up with an inseparable bond, and now support each other as mothers. Before Odongo gave birth, she played an active role in caring for Djembe. Now, both sisters are raising calves that may help save their species. Tom Robson, Head of Section, said: "After a six-year breeding gap, two healthy calves were born within months. It’s a major success for the breeding programme. Every birth helps secure the future of these beautiful animals." Visitors to Woburn Safari Park are invited to witness this touching family moment and learn about efforts to protect endangered species.
