OAKLAND, Calif. — The Oakland Zoo has named its newest southern pudu calf “Quilla,” a nod to the Incan moon goddess known as the protector of women.

Quilla has been thriving, quickly growing and playfully darting around her habitat in games of hide-and-seek with her parents.

Southern pudus are native to South America and are considered the world’s smallest deer species. The Oakland Zoo continues to highlight species like the pudu to inspire wildlife conservation through education and connection.
