Dramatic moment US basketball star is arrested over drug smuggling in Indonesia
This is the dramatic moment a US basketball star was arrested for allegedly smuggling cannabis into Indonesia.
Footage shows Jarred Dwayne Shaw, 34, crying for help as police tried to detain him while receiving a package at his apartment in Tangerang on May 7.
The shipment reportedly contained 132 pieces of cannabis-infused candies that went through the Soekarno–Hatta International Airport.
Senior Commissioner Ronald FC Sipayung, Soetta Airport Police Chief, said: 'The crime of candy containing narcotics of the Delta 9 THC (tetrahydrocannabinol) type involved a professional basketball athlete named JDS by the Soekarno-Hatta Airport Police Narcotics Unit.'
He added the package was sent by a certain Jitnarec Konchinda from Bangkok.
Authorities said they were investigating to uncover the international drugs network behind the case.
The basketball star claimed he intended to share the candies with his friends 'for relaxation'. He may face the firing squad for importing the drugs to Indonesia, which has some of the harshest anti-drug laws in the world.
