Landslide at gold mine in Indonesia kills six with 14 missing
A landslide at a gold mine in Indonesia killed at least six workers and left 14 others missing.
Relentless heavy rainfall triggered a rockslide and flooding that struck a small, locally operated mine in the Arfak Mountains of West Papua Province on Friday evening, May 16.
Abdul Muhari, spokesman for the National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB), said that floodwaters swept through a camp used by miners.
He added: 'The floodwaters from upstream hit a temporary housing area of traditional gold miners at around 9 pm, sweeping away their tents and equipment.'
Four individuals were injured and received initial treatment from residents.
Authorities said search operations would resume on Tuesday after being delayed by damaged roads and ongoing bad weather. A total of 35 joint search and rescue team personnel have been deployed to the site.
Reports indicated that reaching the location requires a 12-hour journey from the nearest town.
Dramatic footage shows volunteers and emergency responders working together to evacuate the victims.
Another landslide struck a mining site in Marapit Village, Kapuas Regency, Central Kalimantan, on April 29, burying four gold miners alive.
On July 7 last year, 12 workers were killed after being trapped in a gold mine that was buried by a landslide in Gorontalo Province. The response team had to travel 20 kilometres on foot to reach the site due to severe weather conditions.
Landslides are common in Indonesia, particularly during the rainy season. The risk is further exacerbated by deforestation and illegal mining activities in remote areas.
