The things available are limited because the crossings are closed. She needs protein, eggs, fish, cheese—none of that is available. Fruits and vegetables are also unavailable, and if they are, the prices are too high—I can’t afford them. Nothing is available, meaning either it’s too expensive or just not there. The last time she ate something filling was maybe four or five months ago.” 5. WHITE FLASH 6. (SOUNDBITE) (Arabic) MOTHER OT MALNOURISHED GIRL ASMAA AL-ARJA, SAYING: “It’s been so long since my daughter has had a proper, nutritious meal—meat, cheese, anything substantial. Nothing like that is available here because it’s either too expensive or just not there. She’s been deteriorating, and my daughter is no longer the same. She used to weigh 12 kilos, but now, with the lack of nutrition, she has stopped walking, stopped talking, stopped playing with her siblings. She doesn’t speak, doesn’t move around—she just lies on her stomach all day, barely doing anything." 7. WHITE FLASH 8. (SOUNDBITE) (Arabic) MOTHER OT MALNOURISHED GIRL ASMAA AL-ARJA, SAYING: “I’m afraid for her life because my daughter has no food—there’s nothing left in Gaza. At any moment, Allah forbid, she could die because there’s no proper nutrition. There’s nothing for her to eat, nothing to strengthen her, nothing to help her recover her health." 9. MOTHER ASMAA DRESSING HER DAUGHTER CRYING AND SITTING ON HOSPITAL BED KHAN YOUNIS, GAZA STRIP, PALESTINE - MAY 19: A severe humanitarian crisis is unfolding in Gaza as Israel’s continued blockade of border crossings leaves 2.4 million Palestinians, including thousands of malnourished children, on the brink of famine. Among them is 1.5-year-old Mayar al-Arja, whose weight has plummeted from 12 kilograms to just 6.9 kilograms due to acute malnutrition, chronic diarrhea, and a wheat allergy. Mayar’s family, displaced from Rafah to Khan Younis’ Mawasi area, struggles to find the specialized milk, food, and medical supplies she desperately needs. "She needs protein, eggs, fish, cheese—none of that is available," her mother, Asmaa al-Arja, told Anadolu. "Fruits and vegetables are also unavailable, and if they are, the prices are too high—I can’t afford them... The last time she ate something filling was maybe four or five months ago." Gaza’s government media office reports that at least 57 Palestinians, mostly children, have died of starvation since October 2023, with 65,000 children now facing life-threatening malnutrition. Maternal malnutrition has also led to birth defects, while surviving infants suffer from intestinal infections, muscle atrophy, and stunted development. Hospitals like Nasser Medical Complex in Khan Younis are overwhelmed, with doctors reporting severe cases of wasting among children. Mayar, once active, can no longer walk or speak. "She just lies on her stomach all day, barely doing anything," her mother said. "I’m afraid for her life… At any moment, she could die because there’s no proper nutrition." Despite international warnings, Israel has sealed all crossings for 80 days, allowing only a fraction of the required aid. The UN estimates that 500 food trucks and 50 fuel trucks must enter daily to prevent famine—yet fewer than 44,000 trucks have been permitted since October, meeting just 0.02% of Gaza’s needs. On Sunday, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office announced it would allow "a basic quantity of food" to avert famine, citing operational concerns. However, aid groups say the trickle of supplies is insufficient. On Sunday, the Israeli army announced the beginning of a broad ground offensive in the war-torn Gaza Strip. The Israeli army has pursued a brutal offensive against Gaza since October 2023, killing nearly 53,500 Palestinians, most of them women and children.
