A US warship conducted military drills in the South China Sea.

Sailors carried out flight operations aboard the aircraft carrier USS Nimitz (CVN 68) on May 14.

Officials confirmed that the activity occurred as part of a scheduled deployment in the 7th Fleet area of operations.

The Navy emphasised that the mission demonstrated its firm commitment to a free and open Indo-Pacific.

The drill occurred amid China's sweeping territorial claims over the South China Sea.

Expansionist China currently lays claim to almost the entire maritime region, one of the world's busiest sea lanes. But a United Nations-backed tribunal in 2016 deemed its claims groundless.

The Communist rogue state, accused of genocide for its crimes against the Uyghur population, has been steadily increasing its influence in recent years through investment in developing countries.
