Rescued Spider Monkey Violeta Healing, Thriving at Oakland Zoo
OAKLAND, Calif. — Violeta, a young female spider monkey rescued earlier this month during a narcotics investigation in Vallejo, is showing remarkable improvement under the care of the Oakland Zoo’s veterinary team.
Since arriving at the zoo’s veterinary hospital, the 18-month-old primate has fully recovered from corneal ulcers and is now active, curious, and especially responsive to social enrichment, according to zoo officials.
Violeta was surrendered by her previous owner during a search warrant executed by the Solano County Sheriff’s Office. Now, she’s receiving round-the-clock care, a specialized diet, and medical attention aimed at addressing health risks common to animals caught in the illegal pet trade.
“Infant spider monkeys in the pet trade are often the result of their mothers being shot to capture the baby,” said Colleen Kinzley, the zoo’s vice president of animal care. “They often suffer lifelong effects from poor diets and lack of socialization.”
Spider monkeys are classified as endangered, and Violeta’s rescue is part of the Oakland Zoo’s broader efforts to combat wildlife trafficking and rehabilitate victims of the exotic pet trade. Once Violeta fully recovers, she will be placed in an accredited sanctuary or zoo where she can live among other spider monkeys.
