-GAZA CITY, GAZA STRIP, PALESTINE - MAY 22, 2025: Palestinians in Gaza City rushed to receive hot meals distributed by a charity on Thursday, May 22, following the arrival of humanitarian aid that had been blocked by Israel for 81 days. However, many Palestinians were left without food as the limited humanitarian aid entering the enclave falls short of meeting the growing needs. A total of 87 aid trucks have entered Gaza, marking the first such delivery in nearly three months since an Israeli-imposed closure of border crossings, the Government Media Office announced Wednesday. The Gaza Strip requires a minimum of 500 trucks daily carrying urgent relief and medical and food aid along with at least 50 fuel trucks as life-saving necessities amid a worsening famine caused by Israel’s closure of border crossings for over two months, the media office said. Since March 2, Israel has maintained a strict blockade on Gaza, denying entry to humanitarian aid and pushing the territory into famine, which has already claimed numerous lives. Only 87 aid trucks were reportedly allowed entry – a fraction of the humanitarian need, with much of the aid stalled at border crossings. Israel has maintained a blockade on Gaza for 18 years, leaving approximately 1.5 million of the territory’s 2.4 million Palestinians homeless after their homes were destroyed in Israel’s ongoing genocidal war. The war has also triggered a famine in Gaza, claiming numerous lives, including children. Rejecting international calls for a ceasefire, the Israeli army has pursued a brutal offensive against Gaza since October 2023, killing over 53,700 Palestinians, most of them women and children. Last November, the International Criminal Court issued arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant for war crimes and crimes against humanity in Gaza. Israel also faces a genocide case at the International Court of Justice for its war on the enclave.
