RACINE, Wis. — Dewey, an African spurred tortoise at the Racine Zoo, is showing that training isn’t just for furry or feathered residents.

In a recent video shared on the Racine Zoo’s Facebook page, Dewey can be seen participating in daily husbandry training with her primary keeper, Caleb. The session focuses on behaviors like “touch” and “poke,” which help prepare Dewey for voluntary blood draws and body checks by animal care staff.

Training at the zoo is entirely optional and always positively reinforced. According to staff, if an animal chooses not to participate, they simply try again another day.

The training provides both enrichment and strengthens the keeper-animal bond while ensuring the animals are comfortable and engaged in their care routines.
