Police intervened swiftly, arresting at least two activists. The demonstrators aimed to draw attention to TotalEnergies' controversial East African Crude Oil Pipeline (EACOP) project, which activists say threatens human rights, biodiversity, and the climate. In a statement, Extinction Rebellion France accused the energy giant of disregarding environmental and social consequences, citing risks such as the displacement of over 100,000 people in Uganda and Tanzania, damage to protected areas, and annual CO2 emissions equivalent to 34 million tons—six times Uganda's total emissions. The group also targeted TotalEnergies' financial partners, including major French banks such as BNP Paribas, Crédit Agricole (Amundi), Société Générale, AXA, and Natixis, for their alleged involvement in funding the project. Earlier in the day, a separate group of Extinction Rebellion activists briefly occupied the lobby of BNP Paribas' headquarters in Paris, denouncing the bank’s ties to TotalEnergies. The protest was part of a broader campaign criticizing the energy company for not allowing shareholders to vote on its climate strategy during the AGM.
