SWEDISH ACTIVIST LARS OHLY SPEAKINGSTOCKHOLM, SWEDEN - MAY 24, 2025: Hundreds of people in Sweden’s capital, Stockholm, staged a protest on Saturday, May 24, against the government’s silence on Israel’s occupation of Gaza. Gathering at Odenplan Square upon the call of numerous non-governmental organizations, demonstrators urged the Swedish government to take action to halt what they described as Israel’s war crimes in Gaza. During the protest, where participants accused the government of remaining silent in the face of Israel’s actions in Gaza, people held placards reading “Children are being killed in Gaza,” “Schools and hospitals are being bombed,” and “End the food shortage.” Chanting slogans such as “Freedom for Palestine” and “No to Netanyahu’s plan,” protesters marched to the Swedish Foreign Ministry. Speaking to Anadolu, Swedish activist Lars Ohly, who joined the protest, said it was unacceptable that Sweden remained silent in the face of what he called a genocide by Israel against Palestinians. Rejecting international calls for a ceasefire, the Israeli army has pursued a brutal offensive against Gaza since October 2023, killing more than 53,900 Palestinians, most of them women and children. Last November, the International Criminal Court issued arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant for war crimes and crimes against humanity in Gaza. Israel also faces a genocide case at the International Court of Justice for its war on the enclave.
