SHOTLIST GAZA STRIP, PALESTINE (MAY 22, 2024) (ANADOLU-ACCESS ALL) 1. VARIOUS OF TENTS AND DISPLACED PALESTINIANS AT PORT AREA GAZA STRIP, PALESTINE - MAY 22: Once a bustling center of leisure and commerce, Gaza Port has become a makeshift refuge for thousands of Palestinians displaced by relentless Israeli airstrikes and ground operations. The coastal area, previously known for its vibrant atmosphere, now hosts rows of flimsy tents where families endure dire conditions without electricity, clean water, or adequate food. Displaced civilians, including barefoot children in tattered clothing, scavenge for scraps of food and water amid worsening shortages. Over two million people have been forced from their homes across the Gaza Strip since October 7, according to the Palestinian Government Media Office. Many flee on foot or in animal-drawn carts due to destroyed infrastructure and fuel shortages. On May 17, the Israeli military announced a new phase of its ground offensive, dubbed "Chariots of Gideon," with the stated aim of dismantling Hamas. However, reports from Israeli media suggest plans to forcibly relocate Palestinians to confined zones in southern Gaza, where limited aid would be distributed. Satellite imagery shows large areas in Rafah being cleared, raising concerns over mass displacement. Under international pressure, Israel’s security cabinet agreed to allow increased food shipments into Gaza to prevent famine. Yet, UN agencies warn that the military escalation threatens to exacerbate what they describe as an already "catastrophic" humanitarian situation. A temporary ceasefire in January briefly halted hostilities, but fighting resumed on March 18. Since then, at least 3,613 Palestinians—mostly women, children, and the elderly—have been killed, with over 10,000 injured, according to local health authorities. The total death toll since October 7 has surpassed 53,700, with more than 122,000 wounded. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has vowed to extend military control over Gaza, while some far-right ministers advocate for the permanent expulsion of Palestinians. Critics accuse Israel of pursuing a policy of systematic displacement, allegations Israeli officials deny, insisting their operations target Hamas militants.
