WIDE SHOT OF DEMONSTRATORS, SOME BLOWING WHISTLES HAIFA, ISREL - MAY 24: Widespread demonstrations took place across Israel on Saturday, May 24, with protesters demanding the release of hostages held in Gaza and voicing opposition to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's government as the war approaches its 600th day. In the northern city of Haifa, hundreds gathered to march from the Carmel district to the Horev Center. The protest, attended by relatives of captives and activists, called for an immediate ceasefire and the return of all hostages. Civil society speakers at the rally accused the government of failing to secure their loved ones' freedom and urged swift action to end the prolonged conflict. An initial ceasefire and prisoner exchange agreement between Hamas and Israel, brokered by Egypt and Qatar with American backing, began on Jan. 19 and was violated by Israel in mid March. Israel estimates that 58 captives remain in Gaza, including 20 believed to be alive. Meanwhile, more than 9,900 Palestinians are being held in Israeli prisons under dire conditions involving torture, starvation and medical neglect which have led to numerous deaths, according to Palestinian and Israeli rights groups and media.
