A driver stunned onlookers as he zipped through busy traffic in a heavily-modified electric wheelchair.

Footage shows the two-wheeler rider travelling alongside vehicles in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, on May 20.

He wore a skateboard helmet while his chair was fitted with motorbike-style handlebars.

The motorist raced through lines of traffic prompting traffic officials to issue a warning.

Authorities said: 'Traffic law only allows registered, licensed vehicles and driven by qualified people to circulate on public roads.

'The use of motorised wheelchairs with modifications that turn them into personal vehicles represents a serious risk to both the user and other drivers.

'It is incompatible with road safety standards.'

Police are now searching for the driver's identity.
