A flash flood struck a border town in northern Thailand, causing widespread devastation across the region.

Dramatic footage shows roads heavily inundated in Mae Sai District, Chiang Rai Province, on Saturday, May 24.

Local media reported that relentless downpours caused the Sai River, which runs along the Thai-Myanmar border, to rise continuously. The river eventually overflowed its banks, flooding nearby properties and roads.

Thailand and neighbouring countries in Southeast Asia are at the start of their annual monsoon rainy season which sees soaring temperatures followed by powerful rain storms. The rudimentary infrastructure often struggles with the deluge, leading to widespread flash floods.
